Sustainable Tourism Excursion-Melbourne Zoo Tuesday 6th March 2018

Our excursion to the Melbourne Zoo Tuesday 6th March 2018 created great understanding of the most sustainable Zoo in the world, with a behind the scenes tour Students identified with the triple bottom line benefits from the environmental, social and economic strategies.

Our Diploma of Tourism students were hosted By Kiam Yoong the Zoos Victoria Sustainable Manager where the students explored at the water treatment plant the range of sustainable policies, actions and measures to make the Zoo carbon neutral and very water and waste efficient.

Thomas Meek the sustainable manager operations at Melbourne hosted the students later at the Hot Rot Treatment plant where the Zoo has reduced waste going to landfill by 86 per cent by amazing reuse, recycling and composting strategies. The students viewed the high tech treatment plant of animal manures, green waste ,cardboards vegetable scraps from the cafes. The students then had free time to explore the animal enclosures.

Our wine excursion to the Mornington Peninsula Monday 5 March 2018 was a big success.

Motalto Winery
We first arrived to the visitor centre in Dromana, where we got a good understanding of how the wine tourism sector is organised and offered in the region. While we travelled across the Red Hill, the students received information from Tour Guiding student Jeronimo about the Aboriginal Boonwurrung people the first peoples of the area. Their first contact with Lt. Murray and his crew in 1802, the first European settlement at Sullivan Bay, and the wine history of the area. We visited Red Hill cheese where we enjoyed an amazing taste of goat, cow and sheep cheeses. At lunch we had a wonderful range of local produce of tasting plates with a choice of Chardonnay and Pinot noir at Foxey’s Hangout winery hosted by ex- student and owner Chef ,Winemaker Tony Lee. We finished the day with two more wine tastings at Montalto and the very modern Port Philip Estate.
